DARIAH-DE in focus

DARIAH-DE supports research in the humanities and cultural sciences with digital methods and procedures. The research infrastructure of DARIAH-DE consists of four pillars: teaching, research, research data and technical components. As a partner in DARIAH-EU, DARIAH-DE helps to bundle and network state-of-the-art activities of the digital humanities. Scientists use DARIAH, for example, to make research data available across Europe. The exchange of knowledge and expertise is thus promoted across disciplines and the possibility of discovering new scientific discourses is encouraged.

With DARIAH-DE, the vision is to create a space for research in the humanities and cultural sciences in Europe and Germany, as it has been built up and used in the natural and applied sciences for decades by many researchers and institutions. The use of state-of-the-art technologies provides a unique opportunity to open up new ways and opportunities for cooperation and research to the arts and cultural sciences.

Research infrastructures are not a static product, but rather a continuous process driven by research. This process involves the networking of the scientific community among themselves and with computer scientists and information scientists. As a result of the ongoing paradigm shift in the humanities, DARIAH-DE is also a major concern to contribute to its competitiveness and connectivity in the international research context by developing a modern research infrastructure for the humanities and cultural sciences, as well as the European research area And thus actively participate in DARIAH-EU. Inspired by the developments in the natural sciences and applied sciences, there is a growing need for spiritual and cultural sciences as well as new paths in addition to traditional research paths.

Although some research questions can still be answered very well using traditional methods, others which can be made useful by the newly available research objects and resulting data need new methods for their processing and new tools for analysis.

The work in DARIAH-DE is organized in project clusters and is organized according to subject areas and work centers. The following is a brief overview of the clusters.

Cluster 1: Scientific accompanying research

Cluster 1 conducts evaluation research on DARIAH-DE. It analyzes the services and tools provided in DARIAH-DE with regard to its usability and visibility in the community and assesses the extent to which the scientific needs of cultural and humanities research are implemented and where there is still potential for development. It is also in contact with other infrastructure projects to create synergies and avoid parallel developments. In an international context, Cluster 1 is leading the DARIAH-EU Virtual Competence Center 4 (VCC4) and is responsible for the areas of Advocacy, Impact and Outreach.

Cluster 2: eInfrastructure

The aim of the work in Cluster 2 is to create and maintain the technical prerequisites for reliably continuing services within DARIAH-DE. On the one hand, it is necessary to continue to integrate the existing and newly developed services and tools into the service lifecycle, as well as to enable accounting for the services offered within DARIAH-DE. This is intended to create the prerequisite for the planned flexible billing of the services as well as for a reliable requirement and resource planning in DARIAH-DE.

Cluster 3: Institutionalization of DARIAH-DE and structure of the DARIAH-DE Coordination Office

Cluster 3 aims to implement an institutionalization process for DARIAH-DE in order to transform the existing project structure into a permanent organizational structure. The central building block is the DARIAH-DE Coordination Office (DCO-DE), which consists of a branch office and the DARIAH-DE eInfrastructure Service Unit (DeISU). It coordinates the operation of the digital research infrastructure on administrative, content (integration of research) and technical level and was founded on 26 April 2017. The Coordination Office provides inquiries on all topics, technological components and research infrastructures. It represents DARIAH-DE in the Fachcommunitys, as opposed to specialist associations in the humanities and cultural sciences, and coordinates the cooperation with DARIAH-EU.

Cluster 4: Scientific collections

Cluster 4 supports intellectual scientists in the development of scientific collections and the handling of digital research data. The focus is on interoperability, interfaces, data and metadata standards, the establishment, use and integration of controlled vocabularies / standard data, the establishment and operation of a collection registry for research data, as well as the preparation of DFG guidelines for collection planning. A special focus is on the conception, development and construction of a research data repository. Improving the visibility and reuse of research data collections is also a task area.

Cluster 5: Quantitative data analysis

The workspace of Cluster 5 is the development, development and dissemination of relevant methodological competencies, which make it possible to use digital methods and tools for the analysis and presentation of large amounts of research data on humanities. The focus of these efforts is on three exemplary use cases from different areas of humanities. In addition to the development and description of quantitative analysis methods in three different applications, it is the task of the cluster to provide suitable teaching materials on the topic in the form of tutorials and an annotated bibliography and to organize events for the dissemination of the research results.

Cluster 6: Annotate, analyze, visualize

The cluster is devoted to the methods of scientific (digital) annotation in the humanities. At the core of his activities are the conception and specification of applications as well as publications describing state-of-the-art methods and recommendations for innovative approaches. Various use cases of the participating partners are attached to the cluster. Their heterogeneity leads to a wide range of objects that are annotated (for example, texts, pictures and music) and thus provides a generic basis for a conceptual exchange. The cluster-internal impulses that result from this are discussed together with the specialist community. It wants to actively promote this dialogue and to support it in the form of various events and forms of communication. Results obtained in the use cases and corresponding workshops are documented and transferred into training material in order to convey methodological skills and to invite them to continue applying these procedures in the specialist sciences.
